Thermostats generally last about 10 years before needing to be replaced. There are usually signs a thermostat is beginning to malfunction. Here are the biggest indicators that your thermostat is broken and needs to be repaired or replaced:

Furnace or AC Won’t Turn Off

If your heating or cooling system doesn’t turn off, it’s likely that the problem is your thermostat. It either has frayed wiring or is no longer calibrated correctly.

Temperature and Thermostat Setting Don’t Match

Unless your home is zoned, varying temperatures across your home is a sign that your thermostat needs to be repaired. This is especially true if the temperature in the room the thermostat is located in doesn’t match the temperature it’s set to.

Thermostat Is Unresponsive

If your home stays the same temperature after you adjust it, the thermostat may be broken. You should first replace the batteries. If the batteries aren’t the problem, you should call an HVAC company to have them take a look at your thermostat.

Thermostat Has Display Problems

If your thermostat has a digital display, it may be missing data or display faded information. Both are signs that the thermostat is broken. First, though, you should try replacing the battery.

Screen Won’t Turn On

You may be able to fix this problem by turning the thermostat off and back on or by performing a factory reset. If this doesn’t solve the problem, an HVAC technician can determine whether the thermostat can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.
